True Color

Used toilet paper rolls, acrylic paint

This collaboration piece was made possible by hidden heroes. These heroes often call themselves 'building engineers.’ Their work days start at 3pm—when other staff starts going home—and their days end at midnight. They keep the buildings clean and enjoyable, but nobody seems to recognize them. As a night owl myself, they are often the ones caring for me during late nights. Small talks, prayers, warm hugs. “Songbird!” They call me with such a sweet voice.

I wanted their true, beautiful, colorful being to be displayed. I asked them to collect used toilet paper rolls when they clean, and they sure did! Over three months, I received 20 at a time, and then 30, which quickly rolled out to be over 500 combined. I still remember the bag with a sign saying 'Don't throw away. School Project' as Miss Gail was afraid someone would mess with it! What dwells inside that which we neglect can be bright and colorful. Take a look at the very thing we use in daily life and remember the hand that was at work. And let's take a look at their true color.
